Taking zinc: timing, meals and spacing
The short version: on an empty stomach more is absorbed from a portion of zinc than with a meal — in measurements roughly 58 per cent from water against 22 to 25 per cent from a meal. Even so, most packages say "after a meal", and for a good reason: zinc salts irritate an empty stomach. The second common worry — the gap to iron and calcium — largely dissolves on closer inspection. The figures behind it come from experiments with minerals in water and in ratios that occur in no tablet box.
That already settles the practical conclusion: a time of day you actually keep to every day is worth more than the theoretically optimal one you forget.
Empty stomach or with food: what was measured
The clearest figures come from a radioisotope study by a Swedish research group. The same amount of zinc was given once in water in the fasting state and once with a meal, and absorption was determined by whole-body counting (The Journal of Nutrition 1985, PubMed 3973750):

The difference is large, but it does not mean that a meal makes the intake pointless. Two things put it into perspective. First, the body's own zinc, which is secreted into the gut with the digestive juices, competes with the zinc from the tablet — part of the lower figure is arithmetic, not loss. Second, a Belgian investigation with 45 mg of zinc as gluconate measured how much arrives in the blood: taken during a meal, the peak concentration was 31 per cent and the total area under the curve 28 per cent lower, whereas two hours after the meal both were back in the normal range (Biological Trace Element Research 1992, PubMed 1375057). The authors therefore spoke of a delay with only a moderate effect on bioavailability.
Two hours' gap after a meal is thus the compromise the data support: almost the absorption of the fasting state, without the empty stomach.
Why tolerability still decides the matter

Zinc is one of the minerals that can turn unpleasant on an empty stomach. The EU Scientific Committee on Food lists nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhoea as signs of acute zinc load; an emetic dose is estimated at 225 to 450 mg (SCF, "Opinion on the Tolerable Upper Intake Level of Zinc", 2003). One observation from the same assessment is worth noting: in patients receiving 25 to 50 mg of zinc three times a day, zinc acetate caused fewer gastric complaints than the same amount of zinc sulfate. So the compound has a say as well — and it also determines how much elemental zinc a given weight of salt actually contains.
At the amounts customary in food supplements, nausea is not a frequent problem, but it is a known nuisance. That is why the recommended use of our preparation reads "one tablet a day after a meal with sufficient water" — not because that improves absorption, but because it spares the stomach. Anyone who tolerates the tablet well can just as easily take it two hours after eating and will then be closer to the values of the fasting state.
How much actually arrives: the dose limits itself
The body regulates zinc uptake. The more that arrives at once, the smaller the fraction absorbed — and beyond a certain point the absolute amount barely rises any further. A dose-response study with zinc sulfate in water measured this in fasting adults (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2004, PubMed 15585770):

The authors' model predicts an upper limit of around 13 mg per portion. In practice that means: between 20 and 30 mg at once there is hardly any difference left, and two smaller portions spread over the day arithmetically deliver more than one large one. But it also means that self-regulation is no substitute for restraint — the tolerable total intake is 25 mg of zinc per day from all sources combined.
Spacing from iron: where the rule comes from
The rule of thumb "don't take zinc and iron together" has a real core, but a very narrowly defined one. In the same Swedish study, zinc was given together with iron in water, in the fasting state, in rising ratios:

Only at a twenty-five-fold excess of iron did zinc absorption break down — and even then only in water. With a meal, nothing of the inhibition could be measured any more. A review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition comes to the same conclusion: the effect appears when both minerals are given in solution, and disappears when they are taken with food; for iron amounts such as those used to fortify foods, no adverse effect on zinc absorption could be found (1998, PubMed 9701159).
A short calculation shows how far that is from everyday practice. Our Iron 30 mg + inulin supplies 30 mg of iron, our zinc preparation 25 mg of zinc. Because iron is lighter than zinc, that corresponds to a molar ratio of about 1.4 to 1 — precisely the range in which nothing at all happened in the study. On top of that, the recommended uses separate the two anyway: iron 15 to 30 minutes before a meal, zinc after a meal. Anyone taking both keeps the sensible gap without paying attention to it.
Spacing from calcium: the evidence is inconsistent

With calcium the findings contradict one another, and that deserves to be said instead of picking a side.
- In favour: in an investigation in nine women, a small amount of zinc was given in the fasting state, once on its own and once with 600 mg of calcium as carbonate or as citrate. Both calcium forms lowered the zinc response in the blood (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1994, PubMed 8194505).
- In favour: in 18 postmenopausal women, an additional 468 mg of calcium per day — as milk or as calcium phosphate — lowered net zinc absorption and zinc balance by about 2 mg per day (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1997, PubMed 9174476).
- Against: in a more recent study using everyday diets, the calcium content — 700 against 1800 mg per day — did not change zinc absorption, neither at low nor at high phytate intake. The phytate content very much did (2009, PubMed 19176739).
A pattern is discernible: where calcium meets zinc directly, in large amounts and in solution, something can be measured; across a whole day of normal eating the effect disappears. The EU committee puts it cautiously — calcium strengthens the binding of zinc to phytate, and larger calcium doses could lower net zinc absorption.
For practice, one simple rule follows from that: not the same glass of water, not the same minute. Our Calcium + vitamin D3 contains 200 mg of calcium per tablet — a third of the amount with which any effect at all was produced above. Two different meals are more than enough of a gap here.
The brake that really counts
Anyone planning gaps should plan them where the largest figures are — and that is not the supplement shelf but the plate. Phytate from wholegrains, pulses, nuts and seeds binds zinc in the gut so effectively that the intake recommendations themselves are graded by it: the D-A-CH societies name 7 to 16 mg of zinc per day for adults, depending on daily phytate intake (cited after the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, "Proposed maximum levels for zinc", 2021). Between the lowest and the highest step lies more than a factor of two — none of the other influences discussed here comes anywhere near that order of magnitude.
Protein works in the opposite direction, animal and plant alike: the amino acids histidine, methionine and cysteine release zinc from its complexes with calcium and phytate and make absorption easier. In the 1985 iron study, added histidine lifted part of the inhibition again — absorption rose from 34 to 47 per cent. A meal with some protein is therefore better company for zinc than a slice of bread and butter.
On coffee and tea there is, contrary to what circulates online, hardly any robust data for zinc; the well-studied inhibition by tannins concerns iron above all. Anyone who wants to be on the safe side does not take the tablet with the morning coffee — it is no more than a precaution.
What this means for our preparation
Our Zinc 25 mg + vitamin B3 contains 25 mg of zinc from zinc gluconate and 25 mg of niacin per tablet. The recommended use reads: one tablet daily after a meal with sufficient water. That answers every question in this article — the timing is fixed, the stomach is protected, and a gap to other preparations arises by itself if those are taken with a different meal.
Among the claims authorised for zinc are these: Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function. Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction. For niacin: Niacin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012). Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. What else is in the range is shown by the Zinc category.
Frequently asked questions
Morning or evening? For zinc, no time of day is documented as better than another. What matters is the stomach and regularity: anyone who eats a warm meal in the evening takes the tablet after dinner; anyone who has breakfast takes it after that. A fixed anchor in the daily routine is the only factor that reliably influences intake over weeks.
I feel sick after the tablet — what helps? First: take it with or directly after food rather than on an empty stomach, and with a full glass of water. If that does not settle it, the compound may play a role — in the EU committee's assessment, zinc acetate caused fewer complaints than zinc sulfate at the same amount. A smaller daily amount is another option, since above roughly 20 mg per portion the absorbed amount hardly rises any further.
How many hours' gap do I need from iron? According to the evidence, no fixed number of hours. Inhibition was measured only at a twenty-five-fold excess of iron in water — with a meal it had disappeared. Anyone taking both preparations simply follows the recommended uses: iron before one meal, zinc after another.
Can I take zinc together with magnesium? No relevant interaction is documented for that. Unlike with iron and calcium, there are no investigations here showing inhibition at customary amounts. Anyone taking both can go by whichever timing is better tolerated — with magnesium bisglycinate that is often the evening.
