Buying zinc: price per day, not price per milligram
For most nutrients the answer to the price question is: work out the price per milligram. With zinc that is exactly what leads you astray. The reason is a figure that has no equivalent for magnesium or vitamin C: for zinc the EU Scientific Committee on Food derived a tolerable upper intake level of 25 mg per day for adults (SCF 2003). Anything beyond that is not taken on top β it is not taken at all.
That overturns the usual logic. A pack with 50 mg per tablet delivers twice as many milligrams for the money and still not a single extra day of supply, because the daily portion is capped. The figure that really makes two zinc packs comparable is therefore the price per daily portion β and from it the price per month.
Why "more milligrams for your money" does not count here
Three reference values mark out the range within which every purchase decision moves. All of them refer to elemental zinc:

Between the lower and the upper figure lies a factor of three β there is no more room than that. A preparation therefore cannot become arbitrarily "more productive"; at the same daily amount it can only be cheaper or dearer.

Here is how that looks with three packs of the kind that really can stand side by side on the shelf:

By price per milligram, B and C are almost level and A is the worst choice. By price per day, C is twice as expensive as the other two, and A and B are practically equal. The difference arises solely because the second 25 mg in pack C is not an additional daily portion but an amount above the tolerable upper intake level.
There is one exception: if the 50 mg tablet is divisible β with a score line and a corresponding statement from the manufacturer β the number of daily portions doubles and the price per day halves to 7.5 cents. If the pack says nothing about it, the calculation without dividing is the right one.
The calculation in two steps
Daily portions = tablets per pack Γ· tablets per daily portion Price per day = pack price Γ· daily portions
The second value in the first line is the one that is easily overlooked. The recommended daily intake has to appear on every pack, and it is not always "one tablet". If the daily portion consists of two capsules, the reach of a 120-count tub halves to 60 days β and the price per day doubles compared with what the price per capsule suggests.
For the monthly price you multiply by 30. That is usually the figure that actually influences a purchase: 7 cents against 15 cents a day sounds like nothing and adds up to around 29 euros a year.
Which figure from the nutrition table belongs in the calculation
Only the "zinc" line. It always refers to the element, regardless of which compound was used β this is laid down by Annex I of Directive 2002/46/EC, which simply says "zinc (mg)". The weight of the compound, often emblazoned on the front, is no use for this: "175 mg zinc gluconate" is around 25 mg of zinc, "50 mg zinc gluconate" is around 7 mg. The percentage of the nutrient reference value, which has to stand next to the amount, serves as a cross-check: 250 % NRV corresponds to 25 mg, 100 % corresponds to 10 mg. If the milligram figure and the percentage do not match, something is wrong with the declaration.
What has to be on the label
The German Food Supplements Regulation (NemV) requires in Β§ 4, among other things:
- the designation "food supplement" β not "mineral complex" or "vital formula" on its own;
- the amounts of the nutrients related to the stated daily intake, together with the percentage of the nutrient reference values;
- the recommended daily intake in portions;
- the warning not to exceed the stated recommended daily dose;
- the notice to store the product out of the reach of young children;
- the notice that food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced diet.
On top of that comes the ingredients list with the zinc compound used. Only the sixteen compounds from Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC are permitted. If the ingredients list contains none of them but merely says "zinc", the declaration is incomplete β a factual reason to leave the pack on the shelf.
The tolerance hardly anyone reckons with
The value on the label is an average, not a measurement of the tub in your hand. How far the actual content may deviate is governed by a European Commission guidance document of December 2012. For minerals in food supplements, its Table 2 gives a tolerance range of β20 % to +45 %, measurement uncertainty already included.
Applied to 25 declared milligrams of zinc that means: between 20 and around 36 mg a pack counts as compliant. The guidance has no formal legal status and expressly requires manufacturers not to set the average value at the edge of the tolerance range. For a purchase decision one practical conclusion remains nonetheless: the declared amount is precise enough to compare packs, but not precise enough to add up two zinc-containing preparations side by side right up to the 25 mg mark. Where several sources come together β a multivitamin, a skin-and-hair product, a zinc tablet β the sum matters, not the individual figure.
Combination products: count the second nutrient in
Zinc rarely stands alone in the tub. Whether a combination is good value hangs on a single question: would you buy the second nutrient anyway? If yes, the combination product is almost always cheaper than two packs. If no, you are paying for a component you do not need β and one that, with zinc, is not even allowed to raise the daily amount.
The combination turns up most often in products for skin, hair and nails, where zinc usually stands alongside biotin and selenium. One combination where the calculation speaks against it is zinc together with iron in the same tablet: both compete for the same uptake routes, which is why a gap in time is customary β as described in Taking zinc. Additives, capsule shell, pack size

A few technical ingredients belong to every pressed tablet and are not a quality defect: fillers such as microcrystalline cellulose give the tablet its volume, anti-caking agents such as magnesium salts of fatty acids or silicon dioxide stop the powder sticking in the press. With capsules the shell decides whether they suit a plant-based diet: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is plant-based, gelatine is not.
For pack size, the simple conversion via the daily portion applies: 180 tablets at one tablet a day last six months, 365 tablets a year. Large packs almost always lower the price per day β but they only make sense if the best-before date covers the intended period of use and you actually want to take the preparation that long.

The 25 mg correspond to the tolerable upper intake level for adults; in 2021 the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment proposed a lower maximum amount of 6.5 mg per daily dose for food supplements, and binding EU maximum amounts for minerals do not exist to this day. Anyone additionally taking a multivitamin preparation counts its zinc share in.
Among the authorised statements for zinc are these: Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function. Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction. For niacin: Niacin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012). Frequently asked questions
Is a high-strength zinc preparation more economical? Not with zinc. Above 25 mg a day the amount lies above the tolerable upper intake level for adults, and milligrams you do not take are not value for money. A high strength only becomes economical if the tablet is expressly divisible.
What do I look at first in the declaration? At three items in this order: the "zinc" line in milligrams, the recommended daily intake and the zinc compound in the ingredients list. If one of them is missing, the pack cannot be compared with another.
Is the big tub worth it? Almost always on price per day β but only if the best-before date covers the period of use. At one tablet a day, 180 pieces last six months; a year's supply that stays in the cupboard after four months was the more expensive product.
Why does some packaging show a different milligram figure from the ad text? Because the nutrition table states the element and the ad text often the weight of the compound. Comparison is made exclusively with the table; the percentage of the nutrient reference value next to it is the quick cross-check.
