Taking selenium: timing, meals, vitamin C
The short answer for most buyers: one tablet a day, with or after a meal, always at roughly the same occasion — that is all it takes. Timing is the weakest lever there is with selenium. The best-known rule, on the other hand — keeping a gap to vitamin C — comes from the package leaflet of medicines containing sodium selenite and does not apply to a large share of food supplements at all: where the selenium comes as enriched yeast or as L-selenomethionine, the question does not arise.
This is exactly where buyers come unstuck. They read "at least one hour apart from vitamin C", push breakfast back, skip the orange juice — and are holding a product the rule was never written for. So the first look belongs not to the clock but to the ingredients list.
First the ingredients list, then the schedule
Which compound is printed on the pack decides all three practical questions — meal, vitamin C, gap to other supplements. The forms themselves and how they differ are a subject of their own; what matters here is only what follows from them for taking the product.

For selenium overall an absorption of around 70 to 80 % is assumed, for selenomethionine above 90 % (Joint Expert Commission BVL/BfArM, opinion 02/2021). Unlike with iron or zinc, the body does not turn selenium absorption down according to need — what arrives, arrives. That is why the question of the optimal moment matters less with selenium than with other trace elements, and the question of the total amount matters more: the upper level is the decisive figure, not the hour on the clock.
Where the vitamin C rule comes from

Its origin is chemistry, not a study result. Selenite carries selenium in oxidation state +4; ascorbic acid is a reducing agent and can reduce it to elemental selenium, which precipitates as a red solid and is barely usable. That can be demonstrated in a test tube, and accordingly it appears in the patient information leaflets of selenite-containing medicines. The leaflet of selenase 50 AP puts it like this: taking vitamin C at the same time should be avoided, while taking the medicine and, for example, vitamin C separately with a gap of at least 1 hour is possible.
These medicines contain sodium selenite pentahydrate without exception, usually in amounts between 50 and 300 µg selenium per daily dose. So the warning applies to a particular compound in a particular order of magnitude — not to "selenium" as such.
What has been measured in humans
It gets interesting when you move from test-tube chemistry to trials in people: there the interaction shows up not only weaker, but in part with the opposite sign.
- In an isotope study at MIT, young men were given an oral dose of ⁷⁴Se-selenite once on a diet containing around 20 mg vitamin C per day and once with 1 g per day. The low vitamin C intake went with a lower absorption rate, lower retention and a smaller exchangeable selenium pool — so the high intake came off better (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1989;49:862–869, PubMed 2718921).
- In a Finnish study, female students took 50 µg selenium as sodium selenate, 200 mg ascorbic acid or both, three times a day with meals for four weeks. Plasma selenium rose in all three groups, most strongly in the combination group; the authors concluded that vitamin C has a rather favourable influence on the utilisation of dietary selenium (Human Nutrition: Clinical Nutrition 1985, PubMed 4019267).
Neither finding invalidates the rule — the reduction needs high concentrations of both substances in the same place at the same time, so more the effervescent tablet with 1,000 mg vitamin C together with the selenite in the same glass than the kiwi at breakfast. But it puts the rule in its place: an hour's gap costs nothing and is reasonable caution with selenite products. A reason to avoid fruit, juice or peppers cannot be derived from it.
When both are in one tablet
The special case the rule does not foresee: combination products in which sodium selenite and vitamin C are pressed together — common in multivitamin and "immune" products. Then no gap can be kept, because the decision has already been made inside the tablet. Anyone who takes the point seriously has two options: choose a product with organically bound selenium, where the question does not arise, or buy selenium and vitamin C separately and take them at different times. On the pack this is visible in the ingredients list, not in the nutrition table — the latter states only the amount of selenium, never the compound.
With a meal or on an empty stomach
For zinc there are measured figures on this — on an empty stomach a good twice as much arrives as with food, as set out in Taking zinc. For selenium nothing comparable exists. The "empty stomach" recommendation for the selenite medicines comes from the same corner as the vitamin C rule: an empty stomach means fewer food components that can react with the salt. For selenium yeast and selenomethionine the opposite advice is usual, namely with or after a meal — not because more would be absorbed then, but because a fixed meal is the most reliable anchor in the daily routine.
Anyone taking several supplements should read the advice practically anyway: the difference between a good and a very good habit is smaller than the one between "daily" and "most days".
Morning or evening: the weakest lever

Unlike with melatonin, there is no time-of-day reason for a particular moment with selenium. Selenium is built into selenoproteins that are turned over across days and weeks — the body does not work in hours here. How slow the system is shows a British intervention study: 119 adults took selenium yeast providing 50, 100 or 200 µg selenium daily for twelve weeks. Plasma selenium reached a plateau in the lower dose groups only after about six weeks, in the 200 µg group after ten weeks; selenoprotein P did not rise further above 50 µg per day (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2010, PubMed 20181815).
Two practical conclusions: first, the hour is immaterial, regularity is not — after a forgotten tablet nothing is "made up", the next portion simply comes the next day. Second, it is not worth measuring again after two weeks; the curve has barely started by then.
Gap to thyroid hormones
Many people who buy selenium also take levothyroxine — and there the timing really is strict: the patient information leaflets require it to be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before breakfast. For calcium- and iron-containing medicines they explicitly name a gap of at least two hours, because these salts can bind the hormone.
Selenium is not on that list. The reason not to swallow it at the same time anyway is the hormone's own empty-stomach requirement: anyone taking the selenium tablet with breakfast has the necessary gap automatically. A fixed order — levothyroxine after getting up, selenium half an hour later with food — settles the question without any arithmetic. With thyroid medication, the decision about a selenium supplement belongs in the doctor's office, not on the shelf.
Gap to zinc, iron and calcium
For selenium no competition with other minerals for the same absorption route is documented — in contrast to the interactions between zinc, iron and calcium, which are measurable at least under laboratory conditions. A product with several trace elements is therefore not a problem, as long as the amounts are right.
What that means for our product
Our Selenium 100 µg contains selenium-enriched yeast, that is, organically bound selenium. So the simple variant applies: one tablet daily after a meal, no gap to vitamin C needed, time of day freely chosen. One tablet provides 100 µg selenium and thus 182 % of the nutrient reference value of 55 µg (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, Annex XIII). The following claims are authorised for selenium (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012): Selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take selenium with breakfast if there is orange juice? With selenium yeast and L-selenomethionine yes, without restriction. With a sodium selenite product it is better to keep the hour's gap the leaflet names — not because of the juice alone, but because the same caution applies to high-dose vitamin C supplements.
Is it bad if I forget a tablet? No. Plasma selenium takes six to ten weeks to reach a stable level; a single day carries no weight in that. A double amount the next day still makes no sense: the recommended intake applies per day, and with selenium the distance to the upper level is small.
Morning or evening — is there a difference? None that is documented. Selenium has no time-of-day link like melatonin. Take it at the time you can reliably keep to in everyday life.
How long does it take for the selenium level in the blood to change? In the British study with selenium yeast, plasma selenium reached a plateau after about six weeks at 50 and 100 µg per day, and after ten weeks at 200 µg. A blood test two weeks after starting therefore mainly measures the beginning of the curve.
